If you are ready to buy a new home, whether it will be your first or your 100th, you should work with a real estate agent with whom you are comfortable. Not just someone who seems okay or is pleasant, but someone you wouldn't mind having over for a barbecue. The reason for this is because you should spend a lot of time looking at homes for sale unless you have always wanted a certain house and it just went up for sale. Even then, however, you should not make too hasty a decision. Consider the following if you are going to buy a home

Location

While you and your family may be very comfortable in the neighborhood where you currently live, you may find you want or need a change. Just because you have lived there for the past however long does not mean you still have the same neighbors. Businesses in the area may have left, your children might have moved on to new schools that require a bus, or maybe your new job is just too far away from where you live now. However, if you are going to be changing the general area you have been living in, you need to be sure to visit a number of homes in all the possible new neighborhoods to be sure you will be comfortable in the new area.

Size

Of course, you do not want to try and fit a family of five or six in a one bedroom home two bedrooms would probably still be pushing it. However, do you really need to have an extra bedroom for visitors, a den, a family room, and a living room? Check out a few homes that are of different sizes. You may be surprised at how much you like the idea of fewer or smaller rooms. Then again, if you are used to and like the smaller house you are living in having something bigger, less crowded may be just what you decide you want. Do not dismiss looking at homes for sale because of their size, it can be very deceiving.

If you want to look at many homes, and you really should be sure that you are at least pre-qualified to make a purchase. It would be best if you were already approved a certain mortgage. You may think your real estate agent is just the greatest thing since sliced cheese, but if he or she spends hours and days working with you just to find out you cannot buy anything, it will be a different ballgame. Don't go messing with someone's income, get approved and then go ahead and look at all the houses you want.
